We are very involved in both Bearded Collie and Old English Rescue. As a result of this, we get a lot of phone calls to go to the pound and check out a dog that is there.
About eight years ago, I got a phone call as part of the bearded collie rescue network. I was told there were two bearded collies at the local animal shelter, and if someone didn't get there within the hour, they were going to be put to sleep. I immediately took off, and found shadow and his friend sparky there.
Sparky was a bearded collie, but shadow was not. It turns out that they had been raised together according to the shelter workers. Their owner had recently passed away, and the family had put the dogs in the shelter.
I took both dogs out, hoping to find a home where they could live together. That wasn't to be. We found a wonderful home for Sparky, but they only wanted one dog. After several months, Shadow had won us over. He is a total love, and spends his days curled up on our couch.
He worked sheep when he was younger, and was very good at it. I did not work him much, since he had front joint problems that cropped up after a work session. However, if I kept his sessions short, and didn't let him run much in large areas, he was fine. He has arthritis now, so he is retired.
He lived a long life. At the end, the vet told us he estimated Shadow was about sixteen, very old for a dog of his size (about 90 pounds at his top weight). He's now at rainbow bridge, helping the others with the flock.
