Are exotic pets safe?
Some of them are, but many of them are not and many are also illegal to own. Pets such as large cats, and I mean tigers and ocelots, are very dangerous and not legal for individual homeowners to own. Other pets such as poisonous snakes and scorpions do not make good pets either. Constrictors can grow to be over 17 feet long and easily consume the neighbor’s dog which they are known to do after escaping their pens, which they are very good at. Crocodiles and alligators are definitely a no go as well as chimps and monkeys although they are much cuter. Small turtles are actually dangerous too, most carry the salmonella bacteria. Hamsters are safe although they are not considered very exotic.
What is the most popular pet?
Cats and dogs are the most popular pets and among them Labrador retrievers are the most popular dogs and Persians are the most popular cats. The most popular cat name is Kitty. Who would have thought? The most popular dog name is not Fido however, it’s Max.
I am allergic to dogs. Are there any that are hypoallergenic?
This is a common question. There is not a specific type of dog that is hypoallergenic because people are allergic to different parts of the dog. For some people it is the fur, for some the saliva, but for most it is the dander. Some things to look for in breeds are dogs with no hair or very little, such as boxers and Chihuahuas. These may acerbate the problem if you are allergic to the saliva. Dogs with human like hair are great for many people and include breeds such as the Yorkshire terrier. This type of hair tends to shed less. Dogs that don’t shed such as cocker spaniels and poodles make great pets for people with allergies as do small dogs. Small and toy dogs are good simply because they are small enough not to shed a lot no matter what their breed is.
If you are allergic to cats there are only two options and they typically don’t work for the most severe allergy sufferers. They are the Devon Rex and the Cornish Rex which have tightly waved hair.
